Math seems to be a subject that some children can struggle with understanding so it can sometimes be difficult to find an appropriate and effective math curriculum that will work with your child. Over the past few weeks, we have been reviewing Adaptive Math Curriculum Online from A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.).
This is a great curriculum that can be used for a variety of learning styles and with a variety of children. What I love most about Adaptive Math Curriculum Online is that it helps to identify gaps in your child’s learning and then the program focuses on these areas. This online math program covers Grades 1-6 and Pre-Algebra and can be used with up to 10 students.
Adaptive Placement Tests
To begin, your child takes an adaptive placement test for each of the various math concepts for their grade level and then the program develops a lesson plan from the results of this test. While taking the test, the program automatically adjusts the difficulty level based on the answers being provided. This test can also be re-taken to help evaluate how your child is progressing once he/she has proceeded through the lessons.
We worked on Grade 1 math and there are 10 concepts to work through. My son started by taking the placement test for number sense. Once we completed this test, the program designed the lesson plan that he needed to work through. We would work on the lessons approximately 3 times a week for approximately 20 minutes (except for some sickness in the middle of the review period!)
As a parent, I was able to log on and see how my son did on the placement test, how long it took him to answer each question and if he was at grade level or needs more work. Since my son has just finished his kindergarten curriculum, he wasn’t at grade level for any of the concepts which provided us with a wonderful opportunity to see how effective the program is.
Video Lessons
After taking the placement test, the lesson plan that has been designed for your child is displayed and they can start working through the video lessons. Our first lesson was counting to 100 as my son was still struggling with the numbers past 20. He got very excited while he worked through the video lesson as it was encouraging him to follow along and name each number. He would try to out compete the computer and finish counting each set of 10. The program is very encouraging and helps the child feel like they are being successful. The lessons are short and effective, below is an example of a lesson on skip counting.
After watching each video lesson, there is an interactive question and answer review which helps to identify any gaps left after the lesson and it will then re-teach the appropriate portion of the math concept.
Once your child has finished the lesson, they can update the status of the lesson to “completed” as this helps to keep track of where they are at.
There is also the ability to read the lesson rather than watch the video lesson. This may be helpful for older children or for you as a parent to quickly preview the lesson that your child will be working on.
Practise Worksheets
To help practise what your child is learning in the video lessons, there are also practise worksheets that can be done online. In the worksheets, the program will also provide a detailed solution in case your child is struggling with the question.
Reports
You can be sure that you child is learning the math concepts as the program is automatically grading and tracking your child’s results. There is a parent dashboard, where you as the parent can add students and view their progress and a variety of reports. The reports provide a quick and easy overview of how your child is proceeding through the concepts and what concepts they still need to work on. It also give you an overview of their results for the interactive review and their practise worksheet.
Looking Ahead at Math Curriculum
Since my son is 5, I worked through the program with him to keep him on track. This was great as I was able to watch first-hand at how he was proceeding. I could definitely see this program being very helpful for families with multiple children at different grade levels and for independent learning. As the parent, you don’t have to have too much involvement other than offering support and checking in to see how they are proceeding.
If you are looking for an entire math curriculum that doesn’t develop the lesson plans for your child based on an adaptive placement test, A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.) also has a Family Math Package where the entire math curriculum is included. You can read more reviews for either of these curriculums at the Homeschool Review Crew Blog.
We look forward to continuing to use Adaptive Math Curriculum Online from A+ Interactive Math (by A+ TutorSoft Inc.) this year.
