Hands-on learning is key in our home so we were very excited to be provided the opportunity to review e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum from Supercharged Science. This online curriculum is incredible for inspiring your children. It is fun, self-guiding and easy to use with lots of experiments.
It has been designed by Aurora Lipper. She is a mechanical engineer and her incredible knowledge and enthusiasm for science easily shows through in the lesson videos. This curriculum includes 1000s of videos and hands-on experiments for grades K-12.
How This Science Curriculum Works
We were provided with a one year subscription to e-Science Homeschool Science Curriculum. Once you are logged in, you can easily select to view the curriculum by the topic or by the grade level.
We chose to view it by the grade level since I was primarily only using it with my oldest son. However, if you have children in multiple grades, this curriculum will work very well with a wide age range when you select to work through it by topic.
Your child can start by choosing a unit to work through. At the beginning of each unit, they are provided with a short introduction to the topic, a list of the scientific concepts that will be covered and an overview of what your child will be able to do by the end of the unit.
Next, you child chooses a lesson with a science experiment within the unit. Lessons include some readings, a video, experiments and some exercises.
Most of the experiments use common everyday materials and a material and supply list is included for each unit.
After your child has completed the science experiments for the unit, there is an assessment that you can print.
How We Used this Science Curriculum
Since we chose to work through the curriculum using the grade level option, we started with First Grade which includes four units. Physics of Sound, Life Science, Physics of Light and Earth Science. We started with Physics of Sound and there were 12 experiments within this unit.
First, we softly scratch the table with a spoon to see how clearly we could hear the spoon scratching on the table when our head was on the table.
Next, the boys had a lot of fun making their own telephone and learning about how sound waves move through the string.
They also enjoyed learning about frequency, ear tricks, humming balloon, harmonicas and making their own sound-to-light transformer.
The assessment for Physics of Sound includes some questions for you to discuss with your child and a short worksheet that helps to demonstrate how well your child has understood the key concepts in the unit. It was neat to see how well my son had understood what was taught in the lessons. He is a great hands-on learner and this was reflected well in the assessment.
We have now started the life science unit as my son really likes learning about life science. My son was talking about genetics so we decided to start with the tracking traits lesson. It was a lot of fun to create a family using genetics (and coins!). It led into some great discussion about our family and our cattle!
