If you are looking for a learn to read curriculum that includes everything you need to teach your child, the R.E.A.D Curriculum Notebook Gr. 1 from Crafty Classroom is a great choice! Crafty Classroom offers fun, creative resources for children from pre-K to Grade 3. We were fortunate to receive a digital copy of R.E.A.D Curriculum Notebook Gr. 1 to review in our homeschool.

This digital curriculum contains over 900 pages and is a 36 week curriculum structured over 4 days per week.  Over the 36 weeks, the curriculum covers phonics, digraphs, blends, clusters, sight words, grammar and writing. There is a complete writing, grammar and poetry program and your child will learn and review 3 sight words per week. You can also tie in some weekly nonfiction reading and vocabulary for science, history, social studies and character development.

How We Used the Curriculum

To start, I printed the first 300 pages of the curriculum and put them in a binder.  You have two options of files, one for printing single sided and another for printing double sided.  The consumable worksheet pages are mostly black and white, so you can save on your printing costs.   We then assembled the weekly reference folder and daily writing notebook.

Once you have those assembled, you are ready to start as this curriculum provides you with everything that you will need to teach your child to learn to read.

For the first two weeks, your child will be reviewing knowledge of the letter sounds, short and long vowel sounds and an introduction to vowel teams.  The remaining 34 weeks are laid out fairly similar to each other.

Each morning your child will choose a strip of paper with a story starter or question on it, to answer in their daily writing notebook.  There are a total of 144 story starters and questions included.

What We Liked

There is good variety in the types of worksheets and some great hands-on activities. The hands-on activities were excellent at keeping my son engaged and learning with little preparation required by me. We had fun playing a spin & bump game, colouring, tracing and learning about maple syrup, pumpkins and bats.  We expanded our learning about these weekly topics by reading other books in our home and watching some YouTube videos to explain the topic in more depth.  We played a spin & bump game and had fun colouring and tracing.

Since everything is included, it was very easy to be prepared for each lesson as we just had to grab our binder and work through the worksheets and activities together.

The story starters and questions each morning were a fun way to start the daily activities and helped my son expand his thinking.

I would recommend starting this curriculum in the fall as the lessons begin with activities involving the fall season, such as apples, pumpkins, fall leaves and maple syrup.

My Recommendation

I highly recommend R.E.A.D. Curriculum Notebook Gr. 1 from Crafty Classroom if you are looking for a curriculum that requires little preparation by you, as the parent, including some great hands-on activities.  I really liked how I could print the curriculum, place it in a binder and easily be ready for the year ahead.  The worksheets are excellent at keeping your child engaged and eager to work on the daily lessons.

We all make choices every day based on our opinions, interests, and based on what we have seen, heard and experienced. We must remember that when marketing our own farm products. There are lots of cattle operations producing cattle and beef for customers to choose from. You need to develop a relationship and a niche for your own brand/operation. Building this will then form relationships with customers that trust you, know what to expect from you and in turn want to support you.
